A quickie…

I’d quite like the option to edit comments on Urbis after posting them. You only get one chance to be succinct and witty in your reply to someone’s review, and everyone mis-types or mis-formats things.

Doable?

Cheers.

Oi! This option makes sense. Someone get on it at once. Or I’ll set TnD on you. He turns beetroot when he’s hyper-pissed.

I’m waiting for someone to tell you that Firefox has a grammar check or whatever… heh heh
Anyway, comments should not be perfect like the pieces submitted, they should show your little imperfections and sticky keyboard.

I’d like the option to edit additional comments too—my typos niggle at me like itchy elbows, plus I occasionally hit submit and realise I didn’t quite say what I meant to.

It might all be wrapped up in same thing, though. I’m guessing we can’t edit reviews after submitting to avoid points abuse—you could post a thousand words of gibberish, submit, get the points, spend them and then edit your review back to “I liked it.” so you don’t get banned.

If the systems are linked together (additional comments are just an extension, rather than a separate thing) it may be tricky to unravel the two.

That’s just speculation, though.

Well, if you have something else to say or have to correct something you’ve said – just write another comment. Or 10. No prob!

I hate submitting multiple comments to correct mistakes. It looks amateur, unless it is done deliberately to derive humour of course. Plus it means the author gets all excited seeing “5 new comments!” on their profile in Barbie pink only to find it’s some gimboid submitting 5 comments, all along the lines of “Oooo, sorry, that should read ‘gasp’ not ‘gap’!”.

A preview option would help. You can preview your review which is usually sufficient to spot typos and I’m pretty sure you used to be able to preview comments too, but that was a while ago.

I too am frustrated by the ’can’t-see-the-whole-comment-on-the-screen-and-can’t-preview-or-edit-either’ issue. We can edit in the forums, we can preview in the reviews, we should be able to do similar in the comments.

Agreed bravis, I think a similiar ‘edit’ function to what we have in here would solve this, as opposed to the old system where a new page opened and you had to preview the comment (which was tedious).

In the meantime, open Word or whatever you use, write your comment there, spell check it, re-read and copy/paste to the comments field in URBIS.

Avatar Bravis 442 posts

Oh god I can’t be arsed with that. I can live with a few typos if it means avoiding the whole ‘typing it in Word and copying it over’ bollocks. It just doesn’t seem worth it for a comment. Besides, when I start writing a comment I usually don’t intend on writing enough to justify the Word route, but invariably I end up prattling on, thus ending up with a long comment that I’d really like to be able to preview and/or edit. I suppose I could always at this point copy the comment text, paste into Word, spell check it and then copy and paste it back, but I honestly can’t be bothered.

Seems to me that this “feature” will bog down Urbis a little and would be resource intensive. I am ok without the preview feature. You can “preview” it before saving.

Avatar Madame Claire 703 posts

Indeed. Perfectionism or neurosis? I think both.

Avatar Karmas A Bitch 862 posts

Isn’t Perfectionism a Neurosis?

This is an obsession for us :) It makes sense; to want your comments to reflect good grammar and such, considering you are probably responding to something where you corrected someone else as many times as you (understood you-so all of us :P) could point out to the person you are commenting to. I hate looking like an illiterate dumb ass because I have (or had: YAY!) a sticky keyboard ;P

As far as a preview button, isn’t it just as easy to scroll through and ‘preview’ the comment before submitting? Now, I am for the idea, but have a need to play Devil’s Advocate atm. Really, what will a preview give us that we don’t already have the option to do aside from seeing how the HTML is working? That’s why I think an edit button makes much more sense. Obviously many of us may preview as we read through, but fail to note the mistakes in those skims until .00001 seconds after we press submit ;) Hmmm…so, I suppose either option still suggest laziness on the commenter’s part.

Though, isn’t there some place we should be able to slack a bit (on Urbis proper)? Shouldn’t we be allowed a time for laziness in that generally intense environ? And if we should, then certainly the place where that should be allowed to do so (and be given assistance in appearing more professional in our laziness)?

I need Advil.

Avatar Jebozid 1078 posts

OK, we need this option BAD!!!
I guess I didn’t think it’s needed because of my former perfect comments. But then I started to mistake! The horror!
I just had to do 3 messages to say everything I could’ve in a single one.
Give us edit, oh wise Steve-san!

Moved from a separate post from JohnsieNoel

For those of us handicapped by fat-finger syndrom and keypads for rodents can we please get an edit comments feature added to URBIS – or at least the option to preview prior to the infernal SEND has been committed?

Some poor soul has cut and pasted the same comment to me 4 times just to correct boo-boos!

I TOO would like to have the option to HIDE comments vs. the entire review they are attached to -

Okay! Who is with me here?

Avatar Curtastrophe 581 posts

A preview button would be nice! I’m all for that.

Avatar Madame Claire 703 posts

I was that poor soul. Of course, I wrote “sole” and had to edit the comment accordingly.

Let’s get this damn option in motion. We have the technology. YOU have the power (that’s you, Stevie).

Avatar Jebozid 1078 posts

Yes, we all know Claire is a pathological perfectionist :)
But, really, we all, as writers, have a need to edit and make-it-look-nice everything we write. And even my tiny fingers make mistakes (or is that my brain?).
Preview option please!

Avatar Madame Claire 703 posts

All right, roll on the preview option. I’m sure Steve will never yield to bringing this back, having changed it a few months ago upon our excessive whining. Fingers and legs crossed, everyone.

Avatar tia pet 708 posts

Perhaps, at least, a delete option for one’s own comment? I am forever posting 9476297562873562783469723649723498273498739487298358726529381098
of the same comment because I’m impatient when the comment does not immediately save.

That’s a lot of comments.

I would also, with sublime eloquence, understated British wit, the cross-eyed sapience of an unhosed scholar, whose NHS spectacles render his greying post-adolescent locks a hazy tinge of mocha, like to express my fervent support for this option.

I too post plentiful comments. I would like to see that number of comments, tia. Perhaps one day when you fall asleep at the keyboard you can entertain us.

Avatar Karmas A Bitch 862 posts

I also like Johnsienoel’s idea about having the option to hide comments as opposed to the entire review.

So, throw my vote in on that idea as well!

Avatar marvin 149 posts

yes. fine ideas.

edit option for comments. yes yes. that’s very nice.

tangent-

and how about enabling “private” items to be viewable by “friends?”

Avatar Madame Claire 703 posts

Off topic, Marv. You don’t really love our beloved edit comment option, do you?

Call security.

Avatar Madame Claire 703 posts

OK… the tangent is a good idea. But security are still coming.

Avatar tia pet 708 posts

How about an option to allow private things to be viewable by friends? My private stuff is pry-vette. For realsies.
